History of Don Bosco Prep

The founding of Don Bosco Prep High School can be attributedto a minor disaster, which occurred in 1914. It was in that year that a fire ravaged the Salesian school in Hawthorne, NY, leaving both priests and students homeless. Arrangements were made to buy a farmhouse and land (which was used as a summer hotel) in Ramsey, NJ for the sons of Polish immigrants. Don Bosco Preparatory High School was officially opened (founded) on April 3, 1915 by a small group of Salesian priests and brothers. Initially a boarding school for Polish students, it was the first Salesian school in the United States named after the founder of the Salesian Society, Saint John Bosco, or "Don Bosco" as he is popularly known. The young men who completed the academic requirements for graduation in 1917 would become our first alumni and establish the standard of excellence for the 7000 that were to follow. The very beginnings of the school showed great signs of academic excellence.

Another important sign that showed itself at the very beginning is that over 200 of Don Bosco's graduates became priests and religious brothers. This is a most remarkable achievement and reflects how God, through the intercession of Don Bosco's Madonna, Mary, Help of Christians, guided the growth of the school. The ever-increasing number of students called for the construction of more spacious facilities. In 1917, the south wing, currently housing the magnificent Mary Help of Christians chapel was built. Four years later, the north wing was added, providing ample space for dormitories, classroom and a small gymnasium. Today the building is called St. John's Hall and holds the residence for the Salesians as well as chapel, art room, classrooms and library .

The outstanding quality of the educational programs offered at Don Bosco, together with the growing population in Bergen County, contributed to the continuing expansion. In 1954 Don Bosco High School's facilities were enhanced by the construction of Immaculata Hall comprising a cafeteria, spacious gymnasium, and classrooms. Over the years as the school solidified its reputation in quality Salesian education, DeSales Hall was built in 1969 with more classroom, office space, an auditorium and science laboratories. In 1972, through the generosity of the Granatell family, the Charles I. Granatell Stadium was literally carved out of a hill overlooking the main campus. In recent years, the interior of the chapel and library have seen some renovations. A major effort has been placed into computer technology and campus beautification. We are now poised for the future -Vision 2000 is prepared for campus enhancement. Throughout our 85 year history, Don Bosco Preparatory High School has enjoyed an excellent reputation for high academic standards and is renown throughout the metropolitan area. Throughout its history the school has given birth to over 120 priestly and religious vocations to the Church.
