Social Justice Week Is Honored at Don Bosco Prep
During the week of April 16-19, Don Bosco Prep recognized Social Justice Week (formerly known as Poverty Awareness Week). The first day saw students practicing hunger awareness by fasting together in silence during their lunch period in the cafeteria. Later that afternoon, the students conducted a prayer vigil for life. On the next day, students wore Fair Trade T-shirts and attended a presentation given by a representative from the FEDICAMP cooperative farmers’ movement in Nicaragua.  This was followed by a “Box-City” retreat when the students slept outdoors on campus in cardboard boxes, like homeless people. The next day, students were given a presentation by First Friends on its faith-based work in support of immigration detainees jailed in northern New Jersey. This included a presentation made by a former immigrant detainee who recently won his case in a court of law. A coordinated effort by Don Bosco Prep’s Youth Ministry Department and the Ironmen Speak Out Club, the week was created to permit students to become aware of issues of poverty and social justice in the United States and throughout the world.

Don Bosco Ironmen Robitics Team Wins Regional Tri-State Championship
The Don Bosco Prep Ironmen Robotics Team has won the prestigious Rookie All-Star Award at the FIRST Mid-Atlantic Robotics High School Competition regional event at The College of New Jersey in Ewing Township, NJ on March 14-16 against tough high school team challengers from New York, New Jersey, and Delaware.

For six weeks leading up to the competition, the team, which was the recipient of  a $6,000 grant from NASA and a $2,000 grant from Mid-Atlantic Robotics, built a life-size robot utilizing knowledge and skills in science, technology and engineering. The team of ten students was mentored by three parent advisors, faculty advisors and three other area non-rookie high schools in the competition including Pascack Valley HS, Lakeland H.S. (Wanaque) and Clifton H.S.

The Don Bosco team competed against nineteen other high schools in the rookie category and were judged on not only the performance of the robot, but also design, knowledge, professionalism, business plan, networking skills, programming and presentation. Overall, thirty-seven high school teams from NJ, NY, and DE built life-sized robots that played frisbee golf competing in various categories.

Winning this prestigious competition enables the team to progress to the regional event at Lehigh University on April 11-13, 2013, and then a world championship comprised of over 400 teams to be held April 24 – 27, 2013 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO. The next regional competition at which the Don Bosco Prep team will compete is another rookie meet at Mt. Olive, New Jersey Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 22-24, 2013.

FIRST was established after a government assessment 22 years ago showed that the United States was far behind other countries in student scores and interest in science, math, engineering and technology. As a result, this High School Varsity Robotics Program was created to assist and interest students to go into the fields of science and engineering with application experience. To provide the application experience, they set up a sports competitive model of having teams build a robot over 6 weeks and compete at 2 district challenges, 1 State Challenge and then they could go to the World Finals.

Students attend Prayer Service in Support of Immigrant Detainees
Students from Don Bosco Prep’s Ironmen Speak Up Club, moderated by English teacher and alumnus Michael McLean ’01, participated in prayer services at Liberty State Park, Jersey City, and at the Bergen County Courthouse in Hackensack on February 13 in support of the rights of immigrants detained in jails and detention centers.
The prayer service and march is an event held annually on Ash Wednesday. The Don Bosco Prep students, In conjunction with IRATE, which advocates forthe rights of immigrants and the ending of “arbitrary, mass detention,” and First Friends, which enlists volunteers to aid and visit volunteers, spoke and prayed for immigrant detainees.  A 2009 report detailed a substantive number of deaths and abuses of immigrants held in custody in the Hudson County Jail. As a result, the federal department of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, which subcontracts with county detention centers in New Jersey, developed a plan for reform, but incarcerated immigrants continue to endure sexual asaults, poor health care, and lack of due process.

We are hoping that Don Bosco Prep really receives recognition for this united effort because hundreds of colleges offer scholarships to students enrolled in these robotics competitions to promote this intercollegiate varsity sport. MIT, Stanford, Cal-Tech, The University of Notre Dame, and The University of California are just a few of the colleges and universities dedicated to furthering this as an intercollegiate sport.

Feast Don Bosco Mass 2013The Most Reverend Manuel A. Cruz, D.D. Celebrates Mass
The Mass for the Feast of St. John Bosco was celebrated on Thursday, January 24 in the gymnasium at St. John's Hall by The Most Reverend Manuel A. Cruz, D.D. , the Auxilliary Bishop of Newark and Titular Bishop of Gaguari. During the homily, Bishop Cruz addressed the students about serving the poor. He spoke about  Christ on the crucufix and how Christ had nothing. He drew a parallel with the people in poor countries such as Honduras, where the bishop was born, and Nicaragua, where members of the youth ministry group will travel during February break, saying that they also have nothing.  He later blessed the students and faculty members who will embark on the Nicaragua trip on February 17.
